Khon Kaen is the largest city and commercial hub of northeastern Thailand (Isaan), a university city with an energetic food and nightlife scene reflecting the region's distinct culture. The National Museum houses an excellent collection of Ban Chiang pottery and Bronze Age artefacts, and the city is a convenient base for day trips to the ancient Khmer temples and weaving villages of the surrounding provinces.
