Savannakhet is Laos's second-largest city, located on the Mekong River opposite Mukdahan in Thailand, and connected by the Second Thailand–Laos Friendship Bridge. The city has a well-preserved French colonial quarter with crumbling villas, a Catholic church, and the excellent Dinosaur Museum housing fossils of sauropods discovered in the province.
