Tourism Seasons by Month

Country Season Description
Laos Laos November through March is Laos' peak tourist season, coinciding with the cool dry season when travel conditions are at their best. Luang Prabang — the country's star attraction — fills up quickly: guesthouses on the Mekong-facing streets book out weeks ahead in December and January, and prices rise 40–60%. Slow-boat tickets down the Mekong (Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, a 2-day journey) sell out several days in advance and must be reserved at the border. Tour operators in Vang Vieng and Vientiane charge peak rates. The famous Luang Prabang alms-giving ceremony attracts a large and growing crowd of visitors — arrive very early or the scene becomes uncomfortable. New Year and European Christmas are the absolute peak with highest prices.
Vietnam Vietnam January is a balanced month: the south is dry and accessible, the centre is recovering from rains, and the north is cool and relatively quiet. International visitor volume is moderate and prices are fair, though Chinese New Year (late January or February) creates a brief spike in Chinese-market hotels in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.
Thailand Thailand November to March is the undisputed high season. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Koh Samui, and the Andaman islands are at full capacity. Hotel prices are 60–100% above low-season rates and should be booked several weeks — often months — in advance. Christmas and New Year (especially on Koh Phangan or in Chiang Mai) are the most expensive nights of the year: cheap guesthouses routinely triple their prices. Flights from Europe and Australia spike sharply. Key sights such as Wat Phra Kaew, the Grand Palace, and Doi Suthep are packed with tour groups. Liveaboard dive boats in the Similan Islands fill up a month ahead. If you travel during this window, plan meticulously and budget generously.
Malaysia Malaysia The end-of-year school vacations, followed by Chinese New Year, drive up prices and it pays to book transport and accommodation. It's monsoon season on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and western Sarawak.
Cambodia Cambodia November through February is Cambodia's undisputed high season. Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom in Siem Reap are at maximum visitor density — thousands of tourists compete for the same sunrise viewpoints, and tuk-tuk and guide prices surge. Guesthouses on Pub Street and around the temple complex need booking 3–6 weeks ahead in December and January. The south coast (Sihanoukville, Kep, Kampot) is equally busy with beach tourists. Christmas and New Year weeks command a 70–100% premium at most mid-range properties. Flights from Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City on budget carriers sell out quickly.
Indonesia Indonesia November through March is the rainy season and the low season for international tourism — but December is a critical exception. Christmas and New Year Week (25 Dec – 3 Jan) create a localised spike: Australian and Singaporean visitors flood Bali during their own summer holiday, prices in Seminyak and Legian rival or exceed July–August rates, and everything books up fast. Outside that Christmas bubble, January and February are the cheapest months on record: guesthouses run promotions, restaurants are empty, and you have the rice terraces of Tegallalang almost to yourself. Ideal for budget travellers and those seeking an uncrowded Bali experience.
Nepal Nepal October and November are Nepal's absolute peak trekking season — the most sought-after window in the entire Himalayan region. Teahouse lodges on the Everest Base Camp route and the Annapurna Circuit are booked solid; the trail from Lukla to Namche Bazaar sees hundreds of trekkers per day. Permits sell out and guides must be reserved months ahead. Prices for lodges, guides, and porters are 50–80% above low season. December through April (spring) is also high season for trekking: rhododendrons bloom in March–April and the trails are busy but slightly less crowded than autumn. Kathmandu festival season (Dashain and Tihar in Oct–Nov) fills the city. Christmas and New Year bring a premium-travel crowd to Pokhara lakeside and Kathmandu boutique hotels.
Philippines Philippines December through March (Tag-Lamig/Tag-Init) is peak tourist season across most of the archipelago. Palawan (El Nido, Coron, Puerto Princesa) is at absolute capacity from December to February: island-hopping boat tours and cottage accommodation in El Nido book out weeks ahead, and prices are 60–90% above low-season rates. Boracay's White Beach fills with South Korean, Chinese, and European visitors. Manila's hotels see high occupancy around Christmas and New Year. Cebu and Siargao enjoy their best surf and beach conditions. Domestic airfares between Manila, Cebu, and Palawan spike substantially; book at least 3–4 weeks ahead. February is also high season as the post-Chinese New Year wave from East Asia continues.
Singapore Singapore Singapore has three distinct peak tourism windows driven by events and regional school holidays rather than climate. January–February is Chinese New Year peak: the city-state becomes the hub for the entire Chinese diaspora of Southeast Asia, with Chinatown packed for weeks, hotels in Marina Bay and Orchard Road fully booked and priced 40–70% above normal, and river hong bao light-up events drawing enormous crowds. September is Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix week — the only night race on the F1 calendar: hotels in the Marina Bay Sands area are sold out 6–8 months in advance and command 300–500% price premiums; restaurants need reservations weeks ahead. December is the third peak: Christmas illuminations on Orchard Road draw massive tourist crowds, and year-end corporate travel and leisure bookings fill luxury properties; New Year's Eve fireworks over Marina Bay Sands are a free but extremely crowded event.
Burma Burma NOTE: Myanmar has been under military rule since the February 2021 coup and is in an active civil war. Travel is strongly discouraged by virtually all Western governments. The following reflects historical pre-coup tourism patterns only. November through February was Myanmar's peak tourist season, coinciding with the cool dry season. Bagan's balloon flights, Inle Lake boat tours, and the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon attracted tens of thousands of visitors monthly. December and January were the busiest and most expensive months: hotels in Bagan (including the boutique properties near Nyaung-U) and Inle Lake resorts needed booking 4–6 weeks in advance; hot-air balloon flights over Bagan (one of the world's most famous sunrise experiences) sold out entirely for the entire season by October. Prices were 50–80% above low season.
Sri Lanka Sri Lanka December through March is the prime high season for Sri Lanka's most popular destinations. The west and south coasts (Negombo, Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Weligama, Tangalle) bask in excellent beach conditions, and the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura) is accessible and dry. Accommodation prices in Galle Fort and beachside properties in Mirissa rise 50–80% above off-season rates; December and January rooms on the south coast require booking 4–8 weeks in advance. Whale-watching season in Mirissa is at its peak December–April, and boat trips fill up. Christmas and New Year bring a wave of European visitors — Colombo's boutique hotels and the Galle Dutch Fort area are the most expensive in the country during these weeks. The hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy) is pleasant year-round and at its busiest January–March.
