Udon Thani is a major city in northeastern Thailand near the Lao border, a commercial hub that grew significantly during the Vietnam War when it hosted a large US Air Force base. The city is the jumping-off point for Ban Chiang — a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some of the world's earliest evidence of bronze metallurgy and prehistoric rice farming — and is also known for its large expat community and excellent Isaan food scene.
