Nong Khai is a riverside town on the Mekong in northeastern Thailand, facing Vientiane, the capital of Laos, just across the river and connected by the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. The town has a relaxed backpacker scene, the bizarre Sala Kaew Ku sculpture park filled with giant Hindu and Buddhist statues, and excellent food at the riverside night market.
