Tourism
Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of Nepal's three ancient Newari kingdoms, a walled medieval city whose car-free centre feels remarkably unchanged from centuries past. The city's three main squares — Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square (home to the five-storey Nyatapola Temple), and Pottery Square — are all part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bhaktapur is also famous for its distinctive cuisine, particularly juju dhau (king curd) and bara pancakes, and its skilled potters who still work on traditional wheels in the old quarter.
