Kathmandu is the capital and largest city of Nepal, nestled in a valley at 1,400 metres surrounded by the Himalayan foothills. The UNESCO-listed Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur are filled with medieval temples, palaces, and courtyards, while Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath Stupa are among the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. The city is the starting point for treks to Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit, making it one of the world's great adventure travel hubs.
