Raja Ampat ('Four Kings') is a remote archipelago of over 1,500 small islands and cays off the coast of West Papua, home to the highest marine biodiversity ever recorded on earth — more fish species have been documented here than anywhere else in the world's oceans. Scientists estimate that Raja Ampat's reefs contain over 75% of all known coral species, and the waters are home to whale sharks, wobbegong sharks, walking sharks, manta rays, and an almost hallucinogenic density of reef fish. Reaching Raja Ampat requires a flight to Sorong followed by a ferry, but for serious divers and snorkellers it represents the ultimate bucket list destination.
