Ko Chang (Elephant Island) is Thailand's second-largest island, in Trat province near the Cambodian border, a national park island with rugged jungle-covered mountains, waterfalls, and beaches that feel considerably less developed than the Gulf of Thailand's more famous resorts. White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) is the liveliest stretch, while Lonely Beach and the east coast are wilder and quieter. The interior hiking trails, Khlong Phlu waterfall, and snorkelling around the surrounding smaller islands such as Ko Wai and Ko Mak reward those who leave the beach. Ko Chang is reached by ferry from Laem Ngop or Centre Point pier near Trat town (~30 minutes); Trat Airport (TDX) has Bangkok Airways flights from Bangkok, making it the nearest air gateway.
