Angkor is the site of the ancient Khmer Empire's capital and one of the most extraordinary archaeological complexes in the world, spread across more than 400 square kilometres of jungle and farmland near Siem Reap. Angkor Wat, built in the early 12th century by Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple and later converted to Buddhism, is the world's largest religious monument and a masterpiece of classical Khmer architecture. The wider complex includes the enigmatic Bayon temple with its giant stone faces, the jungle-draped ruins of Ta Prohm, and dozens of other temples that together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
