Phitsanulok is a city on the Nan River in lower northern Thailand, home to one of the country's most revered Buddha images — the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, considered second in importance only to the Emerald Buddha. The city is an important rail junction and serves as the gateway for visits to the UNESCO-listed Sukhothai Historical Park 55 kilometres to the west.
