Kengtung (Shan State)

Kengtung (Kyaingtong) is a remote town in the eastern Shan State deep in the Golden Triangle region, the traditional capital of the Khün people and surrounded by hill tribe villages of Akha, Lahu, Ann, and other ethnic groups. The town has a charming old quarter with a picturesque lake, Shan-style monasteries, and a morning market where hill tribe women sell produce in traditional dress. Accessible only by air or a very long road journey, Kengtung remains one of Myanmar's most authentic and least commercialised destinations.
