Mrauk U is the ancient capital of the Arakan Kingdom, a remote archaeological treasure containing hundreds of temples, stupas, and fortifications built between the 15th and 18th centuries. The temples of Shitthaung, Dukkanthein, and Ratanabon are particularly impressive, and unlike Bagan they are partly concealed by jungle, giving them a mysterious, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere. Reaching Mrauk U requires a boat journey up the Kaladan River, which is itself a scenic adventure.
