Lao Cai is a Vietnamese border city in the far north facing Hekou in China's Yunnan province, the main crossing point for the train and road route between Hanoi and Kunming. It is also the gateway to Sapa, the famous hill-town trekking destination 38 kilometres up into the mountains.
