Sri Lankan passport holders receive a free tourist visa of up to 30 days per visit to Nepal under the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) preferential visa arrangement. No fee is charged. The visa is granted on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), Pokhara International Airport, and all major land border crossings with India. The annual cap of 150 cumulative days within a single calendar year still applies. Both Nepal and Sri Lanka are founding members of SAARC (established in 1985 in Dhaka), and the reciprocal preferential visa arrangement reflects the strong South Asian regional cooperation framework. Both countries share profound Buddhist heritage: Nepal as the birthplace of the Buddha (Lumbini) and Sri Lanka as home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy — one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. Sri Lanka is the only SAARC member besides India to receive a fully free visa for Nepal, recognising the depth of the bilateral relationship.
