The Malaysia–Singapore Second Link connects western Singapore (Tuas industrial area) with Gelang Patah in Johor, a rapidly developing part of Malaysia's Iskandar Economic Zone. Opened in 1998, the 1.92-kilometre bridge viaduct was designed to relieve pressure on the Woodlands Causeway and is today used predominantly by private cars, lorries, and goods vehicles. There is no dedicated public bus service directly over the bridge, making it unsuitable for pedestrian travellers; most tourists will use the Woodlands crossing instead. The crossing operates 24 hours and is generally free of queues compared to the Causeway — heavy traffic tends to concentrate at Woodlands. The nearby Johor Premium Outlets mall makes Gelang Patah a shopping destination in its own right for Singaporeans. The crossing is completely safe, modern, and corruption-free. It represents an interesting example of infrastructure-driven integration: the bridge was partly financed to support the Iskandar development corridor, which is explicitly designed to benefit from Singapore's proximity.
