Nam Khan–Nhap Canh is a northern Lao-Vietnamese crossing in Luang Namtha Province, an alternative to the Sop Hun–Tay Trang route for travellers wanting to combine Luang Prabang or Luang Namtha with northwestern Vietnam. Overnight sleeper buses connect Luang Prabang to Hanoi via this crossing, a journey of about 22–26 hours. On the Vietnamese side the nearest town is Muong Khuong, from where roads continue to Sa Pa and Lao Cai. The landscape throughout this crossing is stunning mountain scenery: the road climbs through cloud forest and terraced hillside villages of Hmong and Akha communities on both sides of the border. The border is typically open 7:30 to 17:00. Lao e-Visa is not accepted here — a sticker visa from a Lao embassy is required. Vietnam e-Visa works on the Vietnamese side. The crossing sees relatively light tourist traffic and the immigration process is informal but straightforward. Minor informal gratuities are occasionally requested but are not systematic.
