🚌 Chong Mek - Vang Tao

Chong Mek–Vang Tao is the southernmost Thailand–Laos crossing, set in a quiet corner of Ubon Ratchathani province surrounded by forested hills. From the Thai side, songthaews and minibuses connect to Ubon Ratchathani city (about 90 km). On the Lao side, Pakse is roughly 40 km east — the main hub for the Bolaven Plateau coffee country and the 4,000 Islands. The border is open daily 6:00 to 20:00. Laos visa-on-arrival is available and the e-Visa is accepted. This crossing is calm, rarely crowded, and sees mainly local Thai-Lao commerce and a steady stream of backpackers heading for Si Phan Don. There is a market on both sides where Thais shop for cheaper Lao goods. No significant corruption issues have been reported here — the crossing has a reputation as one of the most relaxed in the region. The walk between the two immigration halls is a few hundred metres through a pleasant, tree-lined corridor.
