The Tropaeng Kreal–Nong Nok Khiene crossing links the 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don) region of southern Laos with the Cambodian province of Stung Treng — a journey that most travellers do by river rather than road. The crossing involves a short boat ride across the Mekong between the two immigration posts, which are basic wooden structures staffed by a small number of officers. Cambodia e-Visa is accepted; Laos visa-on-arrival is usually available on the Lao side. The surrounding landscape is one of the most spectacular in Southeast Asia — wide Mekong channels, lush islands, Irrawaddy dolphins, and the sound of the Khone Phapheng waterfalls in the background. The crossing is quiet, unhurried, and corruption is minimal — perhaps a small tip for the boat. It represents the classic backpacker route connecting the slow boat from Luang Prabang through Laos all the way down into Cambodia.
