The Cham Yeam–Hat Lek crossing on the Gulf of Thailand coast is a favourite among travellers making the scenic island-hopping route from Koh Chang (Thailand) to Koh Kong and onwards to Sihanoukville. The Thai town of Hat Lek is reached by songthaew from Trat, and on the Cambodian side shared taxis or private cars connect to Koh Kong town and the river ferry pier. The border is open 7:00 to 22:00 and Cambodia visa-on-arrival is available, as is the e-Visa. The crossing is notably calmer and less pressured than Poipet — fewer touts, shorter queues, and officials who are generally professional. Minor 'overtime fees' can be requested outside business hours, but this is far less aggressive than at Poipet. Koh Kong is a pleasant small town with mangrove forests and the Cardamom Mountains on its doorstep, making it worth a stopover rather than just a transit point. The jungle surroundings here feel genuinely remote and give this crossing an adventurous character that Poipet entirely lacks.
