The Sungai Kolok–Rantau Panjang crossing connects Narathiwat Province in Thailand's deep south with Kelantan in northeastern Malaysia across the Golok River. The crossing itself is popular with local Malay and Thai populations who share close ethnic and cultural ties across this border, and with budget travellers taking the east-coast train route. On the Malaysian side, Kota Bharu is 30 minutes away and is a fascinating conservative Malay cultural city. Buses, taxis, and trains serve both sides well. The crossing is open daily 6:00 to 21:00 and Malaysia visa-on-arrival is available. SAFETY NOTE: Thailand's three southernmost provinces — Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat (where this crossing is located) — have seen a decades-long low-level separatist insurgency by Malay Muslim groups. While the violence is predominantly targeted at Thai security forces and local officials rather than foreign tourists, indiscriminate bombings have occurred in public spaces. The border town of Sungai Kolok has experienced incidents in the past. Most travellers cross without any issue, but it is worth checking the current security situation and your government's travel advisory before using this crossing. The crossing itself and its immediate surroundings are generally considered safe for transit.
