Padang Besar (Pekan Siam in Thai) is the principal rail and road crossing between Thailand and northern Malaysia, set in a narrow valley in the Titiwangsa Mountains that form the spine of the Malay Peninsula. The crossing is one of the most orderly in Southeast Asia: the international train between Bangkok and Butterworth (for Penang) stops here, passengers disembark, clear immigration, and reboard — a smooth process usually completed in under an hour. Road crossings by bus or private car are equally straightforward. The border is open 24 hours. Malaysia visa-on-arrival is available for most nationalities. There is no meaningful corruption here — this is a professional, government-run facility on a main international rail corridor. On both sides of the border there is a busy market and shopping zone where Thais come to buy cheaper Malaysian goods and vice versa, which gives the area a lively commercial character. Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah state, is 50 km south on the Malaysian side and worth a brief stop for its royal buildings and the birthplace of Mahathir Mohamad.
