Vung Tau is a coastal city and peninsula 120 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, historically the weekend beach escape for Saigon residents and the centre of Vietnam's offshore oil industry (the Vietnamese-Russian Vietsovpetro joint venture operated from here during the Soviet era, and its infrastructure still dominates the local economy). Cruise ships use Vung Tau as an alternative entry point to Ho Chi Minh City, and fast hydrofoils also connect the two cities in under 2 hours. Shore excursions from Vung Tau go to the giant Christ the King statue on Small Mountain (modelled on Rio's Christ the Redeemer), the Long Hai beaches, and the nearby Dat Do district known for its cassava chips. The city has a relaxed, provincial feel compared to the intensity of Saigon.
