🚌 Chiang Khong - Huay Xai
Terrestrial · Thailand
The Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Chiang Khong is the primary gateway for travellers entering Thailand from Laos on the legendary slow-boat route from Luang Prabang. Chiang Khong is a beautiful small town on the banks of the Mekong, with great cafes, riverside guesthouses and a relaxed atmosphere that rewards arriving a day early. On the Thai side, buses and minivans run to Chiang Rai (2 hours) and Chiang Mai (4 hours). The border is open daily from 6:00 to 22:00 and both pedestrians and vehicles cross freely on the bridge. Thai visa exemption is generally stamped without issue here — it is not a crossing known for denying entry. The crossing is organised, safe, and there is no meaningful corruption. An interesting quirk: the bridge also carries the first international railway line linking Thailand and Laos, part of the Kunming–Singapore rail corridor that China is progressively building southward.
