Cau Treo–Nam Phao on Route 8 is a mountain crossing between Ha Tinh Province (Vietnam) and Bolikhamxay Province (Laos), offering the most direct overland link between Vinh and the Mekong Valley. The crossing is set at about 700 metres in the Truong Son range, with dense forest on both sides and a cool climate even in summer. Buses connect Vinh to Vientiane via this crossing (12–14 hours total). The border is open daily 7:00 to 18:00. Both Laos e-Visa and Vietnam e-Visa are accepted. The crossing sees moderate traffic — fewer tourists than Lao Bao, more than the northern mountain crossings — and immigration is generally smooth. Cau Treo on the Vietnamese side is a cold and windswept mountain post with minimal facilities; most travellers push through to Vinh. The surrounding highland forest retains a genuinely wild character, and the mountain scenery through the Annamite Range on either side of the pass makes this one of the more scenic overland options.
