The Lao Bao–Dansavanh crossing on Route 9 is the busiest and most important land border between Vietnam and Laos, connecting Quang Tri Province (Vietnam) with Savannakhet Province (Laos) through the Truong Son Mountains. On the Vietnamese side, the road leads east to Dong Ha (50 km), Hue (150 km), and Danang (240 km) — all major tourist destinations. On the Lao side, buses go to Savannakhet (2–3 hours) and Pakse. This is a major commercial corridor and the crossing infrastructure is accordingly well-developed. The border is open daily 7:00 to 19:00. Both Vietnam e-Visa and Laos e-Visa are accepted. Processing is efficient and the crossing is one of the most corruption-free in the region — the volume of commercial traffic and international scrutiny keeps standards high. Lao Bao itself is a duty-free special economic zone and has a large market popular with Vietnamese shoppers. The history of this corridor is remarkable: Route 9 follows the same mountain path used by the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam War, and the surrounding hills contain unexploded ordnance from decades of American bombing — do not stray off paved roads.
