Hon Gai (Ha Long City) Seaport is Vietnam's main gateway to Halong Bay, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 1,969 limestone islands and islets in the Gulf of Tonkin. Cruise ships anchor here or at the nearby Tuan Chau Marina, and passengers typically spend one or two nights on a traditional junk boat among the karst pillars, sea caves, and floating fishing villages. The port handles both international cruise liners and the enormous fleet of overnight bay cruise boats. The scenery is world-class and unlike anything else in Southeast Asia. The area is safe and well-managed for tourism. The main concern is the significant overtourism on the bay itself — dozens of boats on the water simultaneously — but this does not affect traveller safety.
