Tay Trang–Sop Hun is a mountain border crossing in northwest Vietnam, connecting Dien Bien Province with Phongsaly Province in northern Laos. The setting is spectacular: at around 900 metres altitude, the road climbs through terraced mountain landscapes populated by Hmong, Thai Dam, and other ethnic minority groups. On the Vietnamese side, Lai Chau is 35 km away, from where buses connect to Sa Pa (4 hours) and Hanoi (8–10 hours). On the Lao side, it is a long journey to Luang Namtha or Luang Prabang. The border is open 7:00 to 17:00 and does not operate on public holidays. This crossing does NOT accept the Lao e-Visa — a sticker visa from a Lao embassy is required. Vietnam e-Visa works here. The crossing has low tourist traffic and moves at a gentle, unhurried pace; immigration is informal but generally problem-free. The surrounding scenery on both sides — endless forested mountains and ethnic minority villages — makes this one of the most rewarding crossings in the region for travellers willing to take the slower road.
