🚌 Laos Vietnam Nam Phao - Cau Treo

The Nam Phao–Cau Treo crossing on Route 8 connects Bolikhamxay Province in central Laos with Ha Tinh Province in north-central Vietnam, offering the most direct overland link between the Mekong Valley and the Vietnamese coast north of Vinh. Buses run between Vinh (Vietnam) and Vientiane (Laos) via this crossing, a journey of around 12–14 hours. The border is open daily 7:00 to 18:00. Laos e-Visa is accepted; Vietnam e-Visa works on the Vietnamese side. The pass through the Truong Son Mountains at around 700 m is strikingly scenic, and the road on both sides winds through deep forest. The crossing is relatively quiet for tourists — it sees more local and commercial traffic — and immigration is generally smooth. Cau Treo on the Vietnamese side is a cold, windswept mountain settlement with basic guesthouses, and most travellers continue straight to Vinh (2 hours) to spend the night. Some travellers on the Vientiane–Hanoi bus route use this crossing as an interesting alternative to the more popular Dansavanh–Lao Bao route.
