The Sop Hun–Tay Trang crossing in Phongsaly Province is one of the most scenically spectacular border points in all of Southeast Asia, set deep in the mountains of northwestern Laos and northeastern Vietnam. It is used by the overnight buses running between Vientiane and Hanoi (roughly 24 hours total) and is the most convenient overland route for travellers combining northern Laos with Sa Pa and the highlands of northwestern Vietnam. The Vietnamese side at Tay Trang is 35 km from Lai Chau, from where buses connect to Sa Pa (4 hours) and Hanoi. The road on the Lao side is scenic but winding and sometimes rough. The border is open 7:00 to 17:00 and does not operate on Lao and Vietnamese public holidays. Important: this crossing does NOT accept the Lao e-Visa — you must have a sticker visa obtained in advance from a Lao embassy. Vietnam e-Visa is accepted on the Vietnamese side. No significant corruption has been reported here, though the remoteness of the setting means everything moves at its own unhurried pace. The surrounding mountain scenery — rice terraces, ethnic Lao minority villages, and dense forest — makes arriving or departing at this crossing a genuine adventure.
